About how long does an average beta fish live?

About how old does a male Beta fish live to be? I've had my fish for 4 years and he's looking pretty sad, is he dying or something?
love2score13: thats the same thing my fish is doing now! He's really lazy and sits on the bottom of his tank.
 
About 3-5 years is average. When you buy them at a store, they're already about a year old, since it takes a few months for them to come into their colors.
 
It depends. Mine lived for like 7 years. My brother's lived about 5 days. Before my fish started to die, it stopped swimming. It would just sit there not moving. When I tapped on the glass though, the fish freaked out and swam like crazy for just a few moments.
