A thought on Evolution, in the arts?

Most of us can agree art evolves in it's own way. I like to think so. My question is, where do we go from here? The problem facing my generation of artists is a loss in the meaning of it all. Most of my friends don't appreciate how important it is. They don't think about it, explore it, love it. They don't interpret lyrics or even look at the half the time. If I said "art evolves" to them, they'd say "man that's deep". It aggravates me, how can you say you're a fan without having given any thought to the music at all?

Another problem for my generation will be originality. There's nothing new anymore. Anything I write about in my poetry will have already been expressed. there's nothing new. Anyone has written about everything. Where do we take art from this point?
 
I agree with you. In this computer age, everything has already been said and done. I have often thought that there will be no more "classics." No books or art that will live through the centuries and be studied years from now by schoolchildren. No meaningful dissertations on life or philosophy. No authors or artists whose work will be remembered as extraordinary and insightful. Even TV has morphed into a medium that displays a distinct lack of imagination, with all the reality shows and the copycat medical and police dramas. We don't need to think much anymore, since computers and calculators do our thinking for us.

Where do we go from here? Good question. I think it will take a great deal of creativity and original thought from some talented people to evolve. Electronic art and music seem to be the latest thing, but after that, then what? I fear this generation has missed out on the chance to express themselves. It carries into other areas also. Years ago homemade crafts and clothing were highly prized. Now you can buy things of that nature much more cheaply. People engage in crafts mostly to entertain themselves. Cooking has emerged into an art form, but few people do it. In this busy age, people don't have time to cook. Schoolchildren have many more skills than those of people who grew up in the middle of the last century, but how will they apply them? An idea used to be portrayed in the comics as a lightbulb. Now I fear that has been replaced by a ditto sign. The age of inspiration is long over, I fear.
