a success story to inspire you(I hope)

Hi folks,
My name is spud,and have only posted a few times.I hope my story will give you some hope for a brighter future.I had my first discectomy in 2002
for a large herniated disc.In 2004 I had another herniated disc and another
discectomy. after another year the pain returned,yes reherniation of same disc.I waited 3 more years before I was brave enough to go through another surgery.This time I had a 3 level fusion with instumentation L2-L5.
After my surgery I thought i would die from the pain. I had never felt that level of pain before. I thought that I had made a big mistake by having the surgery.I know many of you have felt that way too.At about 4 months the pain finally began to subside and I was able to do alot more.I had my surgery
15 months ago,and boy things have changed.Last week I played tennis again
and was pain free.i work in the yard mow the grass,weed eat and also jog now.my life is slowly returned back to the life I used to have before back problems.I don't read many stories like mine on here because the success
stories are out living life again.
I wanted to post this for all of you to offer you hope, because 9 months ago I thought my surgery was such a mistake.spinal fusion recovery is extremely slow.I am so glad I had my surgery. period.
I am 46 years old and feeling great again.

I am so glad you came back to post that. You are exactly right there arent many stories like that and people get worried cause alll they see here are bad stories. Thanks alot as i am recovering from anterior/posterior surgerywith a fusion at L-4 to S-1> I was doing pretty good before today i got out of sis car and i pullud something it was where the screws and roRAB are and the pain isnt so good right now.

Shanleone,I am glad you found some comfort in my story and hope your outcome is as good as mine. a four level fusion is a big surgery and your healing process will seem like it takes forever,but remeraber to keep your eye on the prize.I will be sending you thoughts of strong healing and hoping your pain will be minimal, but I assume you know there will be some tough days
ahead.Just remeraber the success stories and don't get discouraged.

Here I sit 3 months after my L3-L4 posterior spinal fusion..Yesterday was my first day back to work (just 5 hrs each day) and I'm so exhausted I'm cross-eyed...Getting back to work as many have said is a joy 'cause you feel a sense of connection again...But I must admit after my first day back at my desk and in a different chair I'm having a few spasms I hadn't have before and I'm SO tired.Hoping I will eventually build up my stamina..I'm so used to filling my days and I'm so frustrated pooping out everyday..It's like I hit a wall..

As many report each day is a different journey and a new set of challenges, which are certainly to be expected..It's SO encouraging to hear there is some light at the end of the tunnel for some like you...

I've been a bit discouraged and depressed that I couldn't even finish a long meeting today with my staff because I couldn't sit another minute..i thought I would scream.

Once I get home I can barely fix dinner and all I want to do is lie down.

Thank you for giving me (and many ) some hope.

Thanks so much to both of you. I am going in this Friday for my four level fusion and am very nervous to to say the least. It gives me great courage when I hear such success stories.

congrats on going back to work.I remeraber when i was at that stage.
sitting for long perioRAB was a problem, and i did have a few spasms also in the beginning. Each day will get easier although it doesn't come fast enough.
I was still on low doses of percocets when i went back to work, just enough to keep my back relaxed enough.If you have a desk job I would suggest to get up and move around every 30 minutes or so as not to let the back get stiff. AT 3 months I started physical therapy that really helped alot.
Remeraber keep your eyes on the prize.

That's so great that you are back playing tennis, jogging and working around in your yard. My daughter is a success story like your's and she is back to skiing, tennis and the such. By seeing her success and the difference in the pain level it made for her, I can only imagine how happy you are now. Keep enjoying life. cas
 
Its good to hear another success story (Im one also).

to all those in the process of healing, there is (almost always) light at the end of the tunnel.

most of us who have had a successful fusions tend to drift off the boarRAB but we do exist :)

Today was bit better...I tried to keep getting up from my chair...3rd PT visit and I got on the stationary bike for 10 minutes and no problem...I was so proud of myself...

SO appreciate the encouragement...as you all know there are dark days.

Hoping that you are all feeling good these days...I'm at 12weeks post-op..PLIF...what would you say is the next real turning point> I'm sure everyone is different.
