A species which indicates that the local environment is improving?

Hello, I'm trying to remember a scientific term which is used to describe a species (animals or plants etc) which when present in a polluted environment indicates that the environment is becoming less polluted.
 
I am not sure about a particualr thing. I know that birds often stay in areas of less pollution. There has been evidence that they have been moving more and more North. In areas where the land is more fresh I tend to see a bigger variety of birds. I also know that when you really go out where the air is fresh and there is no light pollution as well, one can see the stars really well.
