A simple formula for working out the amount of gravel needed to cover a garden.?

We are thinking of removing our lawn this year and purchasing a quantity of gravel/coloured stones in its place.

Is there a simple formula you can work to, to obtain the correct amount of stone in a bulk buy bag.

Area x depth may be. Any builders or material estimator's out there please.
