A simple explanation of Interior Design?

I am doing a huge project on Interior Design... there is a lot of info on the net, but I was hoping that maybe you could give me a brief explanation of it as I'm struggling understanding what wiki and co are explaining :/
This project has to be translated into Danish, which is why I need to have a simple explanation of it :)
