a quick legal question raised in the martial arts section?

a user in the martial arts section was retelling a story their instructor was telling and was curious if things like ever actually happened, and if it was legal or not.

the story was about in the 'old days' serious instructors who were good at what they did and actually loved their art would challenge the instructors of 'mcdojos' to fights to bring them out to the world as fakes, and hopefully take any credibility they had so they go out of business.

if the challenge is willing accepted and takes place in the dojo of one of the instructors, is it legally counted as sparring or does it still count as assault? as i would figure it, would count as sparring as long as the other party willingly accepts and just doesn't get the crap kicked out of him after declining.
so as long as the fight is consented to by both parties, and takes place on the mat in one of their dojos is it legal or is it still assault?
