Is anyone else confused by people defining themselves as conservatives or liberalst? To me, when you define yourself you unintentionally become close minded to other ideas. I notice this a lot watching people argue about politics. It seems like liberals act like Obama is perfect, when someone who is moderate can easily see his flaws as well as his strengths. The same goes for Mccain. This is also the reason why I have flip flopped between candidates so much. I honestly can't decide.
 
What's weird about it is that a lot of people aren't both fiscally (conservative/liberal) AND socially (conservative/liberal,) but they associate themselves with whatever party and end up voting along party lines even though that party stands for 1/2 things they disagree with.
 
That's basically the Libertarian platform, and something like 40% of people describe their political beliefs as that, yet the Libertarian party always gets less than 5% of the vote.
 
if thats true, then it is very interesting. i hate how people have the mentality of voting for who you really want even if they have no chance is throwing your vote away. if no one thought that way, then they would have a chance.
 
But if all the true libertarians did vote for their party, then they would have a chance. Its the mentality that they are throwing their vote away that is keeping their party from getting more attention. Vote for who you want, not for the lesser evil.
 
First off:
Being closed minded is NOT necessarily a bad thing.
As an example, I am closed minded to the subject of having sex with any woman who is not my wife.
I am close minded to the subject of doing heroin.
I am close minded to the subject of taking a pottery course.

Granted there are some subjects where being a bit open minded is probably for the best, but to make a blanket statement that being closed minded is always a bad thing is just wrong.

Second: As some other posters have already demonstrated very few people agree with there party 100% of the time.
I consider myself a conservative.
But I feel VERY strongly for gay rights. You won't find a bigger supporter then me.
I believe that there are things that are against the grain of conservatism that are necessary evils in our society - like minimum wage. On a perfect planet in a perfect universe I agree that minimum wage is not needed. But we don't live on such a planet. The country we live in minimum wage is here to stay. Since it is here, we might as well deal with it accordingly.
Illegal immigration. While I do believe that the key word is 'illegal', I believe that something in the middle is far more appropriate.

But at the end of the day if you were to give me a questionnaire I would identify more closely with conservatism then any other political movement.

Therefore I allow myself to be identified as a conservative.
