...forms...? I'm writing a story about an extraterrestrial species and would like for them to breathe a different form of gas. I was thinking nitrogen, since it's so abundant, but I don't know how to compensate for the adenosine triphosphate and Krebs cycles. Is it possible to have another gaseous element (or compound) capable of providing the necessary energy to replace oxygen? Sunlight is also a factor, as the hair of my alien species has something akin to chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight, but in smaller amounts than a tree or other plants.
