A question about my bike?

I'm wondering if anyone can help me. When cycling I find my handlebars don't 'feel' straight, and thus I'm getting pains in my left shoulder and elbow (pins and needles type discomfort). I feel I'm putting more weight on the left handlebar than the right. I've tried fiddling round with them but just can't find a comfortable position for my handlebars.

Anyone know what may be causing the feeling of my handlebars not being straight? And how to rectify this?

I cycle to work everyday so it is important to get this sorted as I'm sure it is not good for my posture.

P.S. Don't say go to a bike shop - I intend to go, but want to get people's views on here first.

Have you fallen off your bike or dropped it on the handlebar at any point that may have slightly bent the handlebars? Even a slight bend can cause the problems you are having.

My advise would be checking for the above first. If that's ok, then you should make sure that the bike is the right size for you as that can also cause problems if it's too big or small for you. Failing that, perhaps you need a different shape or length handlebar that will increase comfort (& comfy grips are a must!) The bike shop you intend to visit will be able to help with that.
