I recently checked out a fiftieth anniversary edition of The Grapes of Wrath (published 1989) from my local library. Since I'm such a word nerd, and this is one of the classics, I decided to read the introduction also, by a man named Studs Terkel (that's right....Studs Terkel. whatta name). Anyway, on page 18 of his intro, Mr. Terkel writes, "Today, The Grapes of Wrath, the master work of a Nobel Laureate, is the second most banned book in our school and public libraries."

Ok, obviously it isn't that big a deal since I found it in my library, but I'm wondering if it's still banned in public schools? He wrote those words 20 years ago. It makes me wonder if it's still banned in public schools. And if it's still the 2nd most banned book, what's the first?

Is there any way to find this out?
Also, if you know of any other banned books, please post them with your answer.

20 years ago, Communism was still alive and active.
Grapes of Wrath takes the workers' point of view, which would be "sympathetic to communism" and make it a popular target for book burners
