A Question About Adventure Time

How Did Cartoon Network Get Their Hands on Adventure Time in the First Place? I thought it was a Nicktoon. Anyway, Did the rights to Adventure Time End Up into CN's Hands by Mistake or on Purpose. I Wonder if its because Random Cartoons Ended?

What do You Think?

I'm a bit sketchy on the exact details, but this is what I know:

The original "Adventure Time" short aired on Nicktoons on 1 episode of Random Cartoons. AT (the series) was originally going to air on Nick, but AT's creator Pendelton Ward had differences with Nick about the show's structure and content; Nick wanted to tone the series down and make it "less weird", so Pendelton Ward decided to take his show to another network rather than make any changes to it.

According to a production blog, Nickelodeon only has the rights to the pilot for a period of time. If it was not made into a series during said time, the rights to the cartoon would return to the creator where they can pitch it to other networks.
This applies to all the Random Cartoons, and is a regular practice when it comes to televsion, apparently.
