A 'polygraph test:' Why do they insist?

A friend of mine, living in another state, is being investigated as a 'person of interest' in a serious, but non-violent, crime.

He has not been charged but the cops have repeatedly asked him to take a so-called 'lie-detector' test. I and a friend here in California who is attending a local polygraph school (a closet Marxist and longtime member of the ACLU, he is planning to write later a free e-book telling how to pass polygraph 'tests'), have advised him NOT to submit to such a test, as they are totally worthless.

The police keep telling him: ''Aw, come on, don.t worry! if you fail the test, it can't be used in court against you!'' But, I was just told by a paralegal for a criminal-defense attorney that failing a polygraph can be used to justify search or no-bail arrest warrants.

Is this true? That would explain why the police are so insistent that he take the 'test,' even though they are total krap.
