NOTE: I only want answers from people who are mechanics for a living.

I'd really love to believe that just the mechanics i've dealt with are bad people. My question is:

How often have you broken something on a persons car on purpose during a repair in order to make their engine seize up, or to make them come back for another repair? (example: screwing up an oil change, or taking a razor and cutting a timing belt)

How often have you done a job poorly that you know will lead to bad effects just because of racial tension?

How often have you lied about the severity of a car problem in order to talk someone into spending more?

How often have you took an engine out of someones car who was going to you for a repair, sold it, and swapped it with a defective one?

How often have you broken somebody's water or oil pump?

Or have you never done any of these things?

Please, tell me im wrong for distrusting every mechanic i meet.
By the way, I live in a country town.. if that has anything to do with the mechanics i meet.
And if you have never done these things, please tell me how common this really is, and any suggestions on finding a better mechanic.

here is my husbands answer (ex. mechanic) No I have never done any of those I actually I try to do they best I can and fast so that they come back and with others. I bet it is because your in the country. a lot of people out there do their own mechanic work plus there isn't as much business out there in the first place. good luck dude there are some crooked mechanics but not all of em.

there are mechanics then there are people ase certified to work on all types of vehicles and machinary . professional do not try to rip off anyone .one bad apple gives everyone a bad name from roofers to carpenters and auto technitions. you need to find someone you can trust to repair your car. 97% of mechancs or technitions, know how hard people work to just to survive day to day. there are butchers in every trade . i am a professional at what i do and i do it well. i do not and have not ever did any shady repairs or anything on purpose to screw up someones car if i make a mistake i take full responsablity to repair it with my time and money. sounds like you need to take your car to an ase certified shop to have any future work done . do your homework as to how reputable they are and any complaints they have had as well as repeat customers. i am a ase certified tech with 20 plus years exp.
