A perfect summary of Avatar...

I keep hearing that this film is going to be the next big thing or whatever but the trailer just isn't selling it for me, that little clip will no way get me to pay to see a film i know nothing about.

cgi should be used sparingly, for just things it is impossible to do with models or stuntmen, and NOT for things like people fighting ot car crashes or animals.

it always looks so fake when used like that

funny we now long for the days for indiana jones first 3 adverntures with their real locations and stunts

ReminRAB me a bit of when final fantasy came out, huge hype about the so called CGI photo realistic characters etc, people talking like real actors would soon become obsolete, then the film went and bombed lol

Hollywood's latest fad seems to be 3D, i'm sure it's great at times in the cinema but it seems to me that it's something that really doesn't translate all that well to home viewing.

I don't mind it being 'stylized' as long as it doesn't have me reaching for my joypad while watching it.
That said, I will be going to get the full effect as JC is a director I'll always give the benefit of the doubt to.

WHAT! Admittedly there were a few ropey shots, mainly with the brontosaurus stampede, but that was it, the rest os f***in' incredible.

As computers become more and more powerful - there will eventually come a time when movie CGI and game CGI will be pretty much indistiguishable - we arent actually a million miles away from that now. Thats not however the fault of the CGI artists.

The human mind has evolved to allow us to be able to spot things that "just dont look right". We may never be able to do CGI that is truly convincing - especially where human/humanoid characters are involved.

I agree that CGI can be horribly overused (the latest Indiana Jones movie is a prime example) - however I think we just have to accept that what we are looking at is a movie - and suspend belief to a certain degree. Looking back at older movies - can people honestly say the FX were better (there are some pretty ropey shots in Starwars and the early Indiana Jones movies).

Plane flying into the mountain and some of the dingy scenes afterwarRAB were terrible in Temple of Doom, makes me laugh watching it.

It's funny how when I was a kid we used to notice the models and fake backgrounRAB SFX in many movies. Things like Clash of the Titans and Raiders and Star Wars etc, etc. Here we are in the digital age, and in spite of the advances in technology we can all still spot the SFX a mile off. The more things change, the more things stay the same eh?

As for Avatar, the OP mentioned the similarity to video games, and I think it's a fair point. Watching it reminded me of that game with Mark Hamill in...Wing Commander, that's it. It does indeed look like a PS3 game. But many movies do these days.
