Mom, I'm sorry you were so unhappy
for the majority of your life,
that you were given up by your own mother
when your father, a Dutch immigrant, died,
leaving her stranded in America with four little kids.
I'm sorry your memories in the orphanage
haunted you, leaving permanent scars
and that you never bonded with the woman who
adopted you. At least you loved Grampa Jay.
I'm sorry the only things that made you feel you
belonged, your incredible beauty and the voice
of an angel, abandoned you with age.
I'm sorry you never found true love with Dad
and that we three kids couldn't fill the void.
Most of all, I'm sorry that I can't remember
you ever holding me in your arms.
You lived behind a wall of your own making
and I'm sorry I never really knew you.
You've been gone all these fifteen
years and I understand so many things
so much clearer now.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom.
I will remember you
with love.
