Hi everyone, please help me if you can! I am currently debating in my own mind over which 3rd A Level I should take and I am looking for some info from people who have actually taken A level Classical Civilisation.

How did you find the course? I understand that the texts are:
The Odyssey by Homer
The Oresteia by Aeschylus
The Three Theban Plays by Sophocles
Medea and Other Plays by Euripides
The Bacchae and Other Plays by Euripides
Virgil’s Aeneid

Were the texts difficult to understand and come to terms with? What were the exams like? What grades did you receive?

I would be so grateful if you could spend the time offering me your insight, it would truly help me make an informed decision. Thank you in advance for any information you are able to offer me. Xx

I did Classical History, not Classical Civilisation but there are some overlaps. Did you study Latin or Greek at school? Without Latin or Greek as a basis it can be hard going, especially with the Greek texts as so many of the nuances are lost in translation. Nevertheless it is a good A level if you wish to go on to study Classics at university, the caveat being that at university level without Latin or Greek- preferably both, it can be quite a struggle at the later stages (despite what they say in the university prospecti). Take some advice, grab yourself a copy of Kennedy's Latin Primer and a Greek primer too, even a basis will help a great deal and if you can use quotes in the original language with reference you will score a zillion points when writing your final exams.

I got an A..... ( the only I A I got at A. level)....!

Its really fun! Lots of wars ETC..... and lots of unis like it. Specially when it comes to do history at uni because apparently most history students now know loads about nazi germany then not much else.
