Just watched this movie. Highly recommended. Colin Farrell's acting as Bobby is excellent. I never would have believed he could play naive so well.

Anyone else seen it?

(is this the one where someones brother goes through a sliding glass window in the beginniing? If so that was a terrifying scene (one of my worst fears), and if not, that still was a terrifying scene...) Not that the movie is terrifying in any way.. Just that scene.
 
I saw it in August, I think, so I don't remember it very well any more but I thought it was very good - I second that recommendation. And Colin Farrell really surprised me, he was just right in the role (and I loved the silly long hair :o)

Aerick - yes, that happens in the film, and as you say, it was really terrifying.
 
That bit is really traumatic having often walked into glass doors I was a bit freaked out.

Has anyone read the book? Does it end in the same way?

I thought even though it seems evident that Jonathan has HIV and Claire has left as she is unable to cope with the relationship(s) it seems to be a very positive ending.

Also with regarRAB to the relationship between Jonathan and Bobby as adults
Nothing ever happens between them does it? They don't sleep together? I wasn't sure if we were supposed to pick up subtle hints? The scene on the roof didn't seem to go further

Was a bit disappointed that Farrell's naked scene got removed though :o
 
I've read the book but it was years ago and I didn't really remember much while watching the film. However, I think the film ended more or less the same way as the book. I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure. It would also help if I had seen the film more recently...
...but I assumed that they did sleep together. I think my impression was that they did it only once or very occasionally - but if it was only once I suppose it would have been signposted more clearly and I would find it easier to remember whereabouts in the film I thought that they did. And I can't remember how it was in the book but I think it might have been just as subtle as the film, so you don't really know what you were supposed to think.

are a couple at the end

Certainly. It is definitely the two of them that have the special bond that keeps them together, no matter what.
And it seems to be that special bond that Clare witnesses that she feels excludes her - I think that is more or less what she feels, even if it is also about her wanting a more conventional life in the end.

I ended up renting the dvd to watch it again because I really didn't trust my memory but now I'm not sure I trust second impressions.

The roof - in terms of the impact the dancing on the roof seems to have on Jonathan, I think it's not wildly off mark to assume that they ended up sleeping together, that Jonathan might have thought it was mostly about Bobby feeling sorry for him, which contributed to him wanting some space from the whole situation. But I think it's also possible to argue that what we see is more or less all that happened - if it was something more, the last shot would then have been the two of them kissing.

Now, if we assume that dancing stanRAB for more than just dancing, then we might also assume that when Jonathan and Bobby dance on the porch (?) they also start sleeping together again. The way they did it with Clare at first watching and smiling and then going upstairs in the dark certainly suggested that she felt it was something that completely excluded her and their love, frienRABhip, comradeship in general did not. On the other hand, when Clare wants to talk to Jonathan that night - I think it was intended to be the same night - he's alone in his bedroom, so I'm not entirely sure.
Does this sound plausible or do you think I'm reading too much into things?

I know what you mean about the scene on the roof
It enRAB with dancing not kissing which suggests they don't have sex. Perhaps it is just Jonathan's reaction to the scene that makes him leave for a while

I agree that
the bond between them eventually makes Claire uncomfortable which makes you think that perhaps they are sexually involved. I also get the impression that Claire will perhaps return to Bobby once Jonathan has left but fo now Bobby has to stay with his friend
