A Good Foreign Film On DVD

I like that film too :)

Lukas Moodysson's other films are worth a go as well, at least Show me love and Lilya 4ever - the latter however is quite different from the other two.
 
I thought "Cyrano de Bergerac" was fantastic, and I highly recommend it.

Gerard Depardieu gives - what should have been - an Oscar winning performance.
 
An all time favourite - Run Lola Run (German); also Das Experiment; 8 Women (French); City of God (Brazil); Open Your Eyes (Spanish) - the original Vanilla Sky: same script but done just differently enough to make it much more meaningful.

There are loaRAB. What kinRAB of films do you like?
 
Does Wolfgang Petersen's 'Das Boat' count ? I think it's a fine film. Also, if you've not seen it 'Romance', quite shocking for some, but nonetheless different enough.

There's also a Russian film I remember seeing several years ago on BBC-2. All I remember, there was a seen where a girl was murdered and her body drifted naked under a frozen lake in a wood near this rather strange housing estate - which seemed to be buit in the middle of a wood. It was all very surreal for sure. Some violence, some incest, some humour. It was highly enjoyable to watch though. If only I could remember the title.

In that case, I think that 'Taxi' is a must - french comedy/crime film; so good Hollywood destroyed it with a remake ;)

Other recommendations: Run Lola Run, Anatomie, Battle Royale, Amores Perros, Le Dernier Combat, Solaris, etc, etc. Too many great ones to mention really ;)

How about the entire oeuvres of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Ingmar Bergman.

Or the early Dogme films "The Idiots" and "Festen"?

Or Michael Haneke's "Funny Games"?
 
I recall someone mentioning the french actor Gael Morel somewhere on these forums recently. He starred as the lead in an excellent coming-of-age film, Les Roseaux Sauvages (The Wild ReeRAB), as a teenager who realises he is gay. This film won a slewth of awarRAB, including best film at the 1995 Cesars (the French Oscars), even beating out films like Queen Margot and Three Colours: Red.

I highly recommend it for those who like coming-of-age type films.
 
Really recommend La Haine...very very good French film.

Le Visiteurs is very good (starring Jean Reno) as well, as is Le Grand Bleu.
 
I recommend Tesis also, a great film. I'm surprised no one has mentioned 'Amores Perros' yet, a brilliant mexican film, in the similar style to 'City of God' which I've just seen on Film Four tonight for the first time. I was extremely impressed by 'City of God' and is probably one of the best films I've seen in a long while.

City of God (Brazil)......... by the way anyone seen the tv follow up called City of Men? supposed to be good too

Fitzcarraldo ......... a werner Herzog film about an eccentric who wants to build an opera house in the Amazon Jungle incredible!

Y Tu Mama Tambien ....... fantastic coming of age film from Mexico starring Gael Garcia Bernal

Seven Samurai ........ Kurosawa classic

Cinema Paradiso ...... I cry every time at this one and Im a guy!

Europa Europa........ a true WW2 holocaust story every bit as good as Schindlers List


Im looking forward to getting The Motorcycle Diaries (the story of the adventures of the young Che Guevara) when it comes out in February too.


World Cinema can seem intimidating at first but don't be deterred, like Peckhamlad says its a immensely rewarding experience and I find foreign films capture human emotions far better than most hollywood films do, whether thats because you are reading the subtitles and thinking about what theyre saying im not sure.
