A good 4 barrel with small primaries for a chevy 305?

I'm trying to find a decent aftermarket carb for a mildly built 305 chevy that has really small primaries, so I can get decent gas mileage. My Edelbrock 750 guzzles too much. I'd also like to find one with pretty big secondaries so I don't lose much full throttle performance. Any ideas? I mainly need to know which has the smallest primaries among 500-600 cfm Holleys, edelbrocks, rochesters, etc.

An Edelbrock '600' with vacuum secondaries should offer the best starting place for a 4-barrel carb. You may be able to swap springs and pins and jets, from the 750, into the 600. I really like the basic principles of the Eldebrock carbs and the innumerable changes you can make, with a minimum number of parts. To really tune things out nice, you need to go to an engine performance tune-up shop like 'Precision Tune'. They usually have a simple dyno to drive the car on ,as the ignition system is electrically watched, and the exhaust gasses are measured, for efficient burning at all states of operation. A good design, medium rise, dual plenum intake is far more efficient at distributing the air/fuel mixture to all 8 cyls. Small tubed headers suit the 305 best. Never run this engine beyond the 6k rpm threshhold. It simply will self destruct internally.
