ok, the path is 34 m^2 (square meters) the slabs are 50 cm or .5m. since the are squares the slabs have an area of .5 x .5 meters^2 or .25 m^2. so 34 m^2/.25m^2 = 136.

A garden path is 34^2 meters, a builder paves it with square slabs with sides of 50 centimetres. How many slabs does he need to pave the path?

The question I have on my paper has a diagram and because I can't show the diagram I can't write the question the way it is written. The answer is 136. I first divided 3400 by 50 and got 68. I then divided 3400 by 25 and got the correct answer of 136.

So my question is this, why do you divide 3400 centimetres by 25 centimetres and not 50 centimetres?
