almost every word has a root word of latin or greek origin, but how do 2 different root words become the same word? examples [and if you can explain any specific words, that'd be awesome]:

change: money, different
light: lightbulb, not heavy
can: "can you," soda can
on: light on, on table
off: light off, off table
tie: tie a knot, wear a tie, tied game
even: balanced, as well [even you can..]
pound: weight, to hit
over: finished, over there, over head
hard: not soft, difficult

and many, many more. so how did they become the same word with a different meaning?
