A fable about the condensed knowledge of ancient times?

I'm looking the origins of a fable about a king that orders the wise scholars of his kingdom to condense all the knowledge know to man to some books that he could give to the king's sons.

But every time the scholars showed the books to the king he uttered that it was too much, and when the scholars where repeatedly meet with this they boiled it down into one sentence.

My question is: What is the fable called and what was the sentence?
