Does anyone know if I can get A&E HD without subscribing to the SD version? Also are there any other HD channels that do not require a subscription to their SD counterpart?

Yes, you can get A&E HD without subbing to the SD version.

As far as I know (for english channels), the only two channels that require an SD equivalent subscription are CNN and TSN.

Sportsnet used to require the HD sub, but that requirement has ended.

Works indeed. I dropped Variety 1 (incl A&E SD) and I'm still getting A&E HD (incl in HD Variety)

No need. Just tune into A&E SD and set the TV to stretch mode. It will be the same as A&E HD.

stretch mode will only work when you are watching episodes of the Soprano's. because the hd feed is just a stretched SD picture, lol.

I was watching a bit of the Sopranos this morning and the image was clearly in HD. The commercials however where stretched out.

I haven't tried to watch A&E HD lately, I unsubbed it a few months ago. However, I never saw anything that wasn't stretched when I did have it. I also noticed a lot of editing and bleeping on shows like The Sopranos. Maybe that has changed as well.
