A deer suddenly jumps in front of your car. No time to swerve. Brake or accelerate?

A friend of mine maintains that it's best to accelerate, as this will reduce the damage you take. His argument relies on the idea that people who know how to punch allow their fist to accelerate through impact, and receive much less damage to their hand than poor punchers whose fist is traveling at constant velocity at impact. I don't know if this is true, but I'm pretty sure he's wrong about the deer thing. Does anyone have an explanation that takes into account my friend's argument?
