A Company name is used as a singular in US, but...?

I'm sometimes very curious about the way Brits say things.

In the US, a company name is used as a singular:
e.g.
GSS Corporation is a good company, and it has many branches all over the world.

But I realize Brits say:
GSS Corporation are...
GSS Corporation have...

I wonder why? It sounds very strange to me.
