The driver has two choices to stop: either locks the brakes and skids to a stop or pumps the brakes, keep the wheels rolling until coming to a stop. Which will get the car to stop more quickly? Why? Identify any assumptions in answering this question.
 
if this is for your physics homework then thats one thing but if your just looking for a what to do in this situation thats sorta different. in that situation the fastest way to stop is to apply the brakes as hard as you possibly can without letting the tires skid, once they break into a slide they are not grabbing the road an slowing the car, and you cant steer while sliding. pumping the brakes will slow you, but it will take more distance to stop the car because while you are letting off the car is not actively being stopped. but because your tires are still rolling, the car will be steerable so if you run out of room you will be able to turn. if i had to slam on my brakes, i would lock them up and slide then let off the brakes, and reapply to turn and avoid.
 
press as hard as you can without locking the wheels up. locking the wheels up will make you loose control of the car because it wont steer when the wheels are locked up and it looses grip so ity will skid further than hard braking, dont pump. thats what you do in snow or rain.
 
A very common misunderstanding of ABS is that it is designed help your car stop faster.
There are situations that may help stop car faster but more then that it will not especially on snow or ice.
What ABS does is it will not let your wheels to lock so you can maintain control of your vehicle at all times. Even if it means it takes longer distance to stop because maintaining control and be able to steer is way safer then stop faster.

As for your question it also depends on vehicle speed but on normal dry pavement if you just slam on brakes, your car will have best chances of stopping more quickly then somebody in panic trying to work with brake pedal.
