container. How can he do it? A MATH PROBLEM
A camp cook wants to measure 4L of cider out of a jug, but he has only a 5L and 3L container. How can he do it?

fill each one up half way...2.5 added to 1.5=4 litres or look at the markings on the jug!
anyway what has the cook being camp got to do with it??

Okay then!
Fill the 5 litre.
Use the 5 litre jug to fill the 3 litre jug.
empty the 3 litre jug.
Pour the remaining 2 litres in the 5 litre jug into the 3 litre jug.
Fill the 5 litre.
Pour from the 5 litre into the 3 litre until the 3 litre is full.
As the 3 litre had 2 litres in it, it takses 1 litre to fill.
So the 5 litre jug now has 4 litres left.
Voila!
Cheers, Steve.

Fill the 3L container.
Empty it into the 5L container.
Fill the 3L container again.
Fill the remainder of the 5L container from the 3L container. This will leave 1L in the 3L container.
Empty the 5L container.
Pour the 1L from the 3L container into the 5L container.
Fill the 3L container again.
Pour the 3L from the 3L container into the 5L container.
You now have 4L in the 5L container.

The two answers above are correct...and if you want to see a visual reference, go rent Die Hard With a Vengeance. Bruce Willis had to figure this out to keep a bomb from exploding!
