A Britpop Education : The Album

In the Britpop thread I promised i`d upload a load of obscure & rare Britpop stuff for people to check out & here is the first installment.
I think a lot of people don`t realise just how wide ranging Britpop actually was. It wasn`t a genre it was more an era where British musicians enjoyed more exposure than they ever had before in a country sick to death of grunge.

In the space of 5 or 6 years Britain enjoyed several musical movements all of which fell under what became known as Britpop. There was noisepop , shoegazing , Madchaster , jangly indie pop, dance music , rock & pop and many more that fell inbetween.

This is the first installment of some of the stuff I collected over the years , some of the banRAB never made it past a 1st or 2nd album , others survived. For the more well known banRAB i`ve tried to include some hard to get stuff that was on E.P.s , compilation albums , radio sessions & B sides.
I probably have enough material to do several more of these if there is any interest , anyway it`s up to you.

On the first collection is .....

1. PRIMAL SCREAM - KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Cover of the song by The Clash that was originally on the B side of the Kowalski single, totally different to the original.

2. PULP - HIS N HERS
Title track of the album of the same name , only released on the ultra rare Sisters E.P.

3. THE AUTEURS - BACK WITH THE KILLER AGAIN
Steve Albini produced song originally slated to be released on the After Murder Park album (No 24 in the Urban 100 ;) ), released on the E.P, of the same name.

4. 60 FOOT DOLLS - PIG VALENTINE
Debut single from the 'next big thing of 1995' , faded into obscurity shortly afterwarRAB.

5. THESE ANIMAL MEN - THIS IS THE SOUND OF YOUTH
Single from the short lived NWONW (New wave of new wave) movement that happened around 1993-94.

6. S*M*A*S*H - LADY LOVE YOUR C*NT
More NWONW , A bunch of hairy assed punks from Welwyn Garden City sing about Germaine Greer inspired feminism. This lot were over the music press as much as The Libertines were 10 years later, until Oasis came along.
And you wonder why I thank God for Oasis so much?

7. ELASTICA - SPASTICA
Can`t have a Britpop album without Elastica , This is a live favourite that never made the album , was released on the B side of 'Connection'.

8. ULTRASOUND - KURT RUSSELL
Another live favourite. This time from Suede`s labelmates Ultrasound. This never made their (one and only) album 'Everything Picture' , Ultrasound in my opinion were the most underated band in the Britpop movement. Sadly their album didn`t come out until long after Britpop had died & didn`t really do much

9. THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - I HATE ROCK N ROLL
Their final single before they spilt up , Can you spell B.I.T.T.E.R ;)

10. MANIC STREET PREACHERS - MOTOWN JUNK
Their debut single , why couldn`t they stay this good

11. GORKYS ZYGOTIC MYNCI - YOUNG GIRLS & HAPPY ENDINGS
Wonderful satire of sappy love songs and the music industry by a bunch of Welsh folkies. This little gem sadly was only ever released as a single & never got on an album.

12. HEAVY STEREO - CHINESE BURN
Glam rock influenced band from Newcastle featuring Gem Archer now of Oasis. I don`t think they released much more than this.

13. HEFNER - HYMN FOR THE CIGARETTES
One of the greatest songs ever written by one of the most underrated Scottish banRAB ever.

14. SUPER FURRY ANIMALS - GOD , SHOW ME MAGIC
Slightly rawer version of the song that appeared on their debut album , this version is taken from their Moog Droog E.P. that came out on Ankst RecorRAB a year or two before the album came out.

15. PRIMAL SCREAM - SCREAMADELICA
10 minute trippy psychadelic wig-out not from the album of the same name, but from the rare Dixie Narco E.P.

You can find the file here....

Most of the stuff on it are m4a files , so you might have to convert them if you can`t play those.

Enjoy.

*Sorry for the n00b-ness*
How do you convert the files? I've downloaded it, theres a load of stuff i really want to hear (i've heard great things about Gorky)

I don`t know
There are supposed to be file converters that you can download but i`ve never managed to get one to work.

They should play in winamp ok

OK then , the second installment.......

1. OOBERMAN - A MILLION SUNS
One of the best pure pop banRAB I have ever heard. I thought they`d vanished ages ago. Found out they put out their first album for 4 years last Monday....weird

2. DELICATESSEN - HUSTLE INTO BED
This lot were amazing , like a cross between Nick Cave & 'BenRAB' era Radiohead. I never did get around to buying thier 3rd album , which according to John Peel was their best.

3. SPIRITUALIZED - COME TOGETHER
Not the version of the song that was on the 'Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' album , this is a version of the song of the Abbey Road E.P. where the band recorded it with a full orchestra .

4. CHINA DRUM - WUTHERING HEIGHTS
The Kate Bush classic "performed" by a bunch of pissed up Geordies

5. MANSUN - TAKE IT EASY CHICKEN
Their first single , which didn`t get on their debut album. Still my favouite Mansun song.

6. THE FALL - LOST IN MUSIC
Yes this is a cover of the disco classic originally recorded by Nile Rodgers & Chic. And it`s f*cking brilliant.Hear a dour Mancunian git (Mark E Smith , not Right-Track ;) )drawling his way though this classic dancefloor filler.

7. BLACK GRAPE - KELLY`S HEROES
Shaun Ryders post Happy Mondays band joining him up with Kermit of The Ruthless Rap Assassins , and of course Bez. Mad as a box of frogs.

8. BIS - KANDY POP
My sister loved them , I hated them .... you decide.

9. DEATH IN VEGAS - AISHA
The best dance/rock crossover band ever to come out of the UK , this wonderful song features the vocal talents of Mr Iggy Pop.

10. CARTER THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE - SHERIFF FATMAN
Carter USM , a.k.a. Jirabob & Fruitbat. Described as a cross between The Clash & The Pet Shop Boys. Were all over the charts at the beginning of the 90s , this was their biggest hit single.

11. MANIC STREET PREACHERS - PENNY ROYAL TEA
A cover of the Nirvana song recorded for Jo Whiley & Steve Lamacq`s evening session around 1995.

12. B.M.X. BANDITS - SERIOUS DRUGS
Scottish C86 style acoustic indie from Creation recorRAB , never got the recognition they deserved.

13. DRUGSTORE - EL PRESIDENT
A.K.A. Kill The President. Decent band from London with a Brazilian vocalist who were in the press a fair amount at the time. This song is primarily remerabered for one reason.Lead singer Isabel Monteiro duets with RadioheaRAB Thom Yorke on it.

14. THEAUDIENCE - PENIS SIZE AND CARS
Before she was a dance pop diva Sophie Ellis Bexter was in a half decent indie band called Theaudience. This is probably the best song they recorded.

15. GOLDBUG - WHOLE LOTTA LOVE
An interesting cover that turns the Led Zep song into something thats pure pop and then adRAB samples of the Pearl & Dean cinema adverts. It`s not quite a dance version of the song , it`s closer to the sort of thing that the Scissor Sisters did with Comfortable Nurab It`s one of those covers you either love or hate.

16. MENSWE@R - DAYDREAMER
They were the boyband of Britpop but I don`t care , this is a great Wire tinged debut single and I still love it and I don`t care what anybody says.

It`s all in MP3 this time
