___AVATAR Review Thread___

Saw it tonight at the IMAX and loved it, but I can see why it's not to everyone taste.

I did here one classic comment as I was leaving from two random people:
"I just wish he spent as long writing the story as he did on the CGI."
"Eh you do know he has been working on this for 12 years or more?" :D

Also to the people who are complaining about the 3D being nothing special, I think you've got the wrong idea. He wasn't going for the whole 'oh I can wave this object in your face' approach, but instead was trying to bring some depth to the film. When they are jumping around in the trees or flying around I felt the 3D was amazing in that it showed you just how high they were up. Kinda hard to explain but it's not trying to be a gimmick which other films use it for.

I'll weigh in my opinion.

Wanted to see it because I've never seen a 3d movie before and it kind of beat ice age 3d a little bit as a contender.

Avatar is successfully bad mediocre story & mediocre CGI. I'm of the sort that neeRAB to see things being natural and photo-realistic to be believable or have an outstanding or entertaining story.

To me Avatar did not have it.

Must have? Ok then, but lets not confuse amazing CGI with a 'good movie.' A good movie should not sacrifice anything like plot, characters, script or acting in the name of CGI. It was sh*t painted gold.

To give it 9.5/10 suggests as near to good as a film can be as possible, which is just laughable.

There will be even better looking CGI in the next few years. Avatar has created very realistic aliens but the motion capture technology can easily create very realistic humans instead. There's a demo of the effect on a site called Image Metrics, the company that established this new motion capture software.

Avatar is the first of a new wave of advanced CGI films but the future will bring us more even more sophisticated CGI - films with totally realistic CGI actors together with 'real' actors and it will look seamless. We'll see CGI actors that look so real it will be hard to know if they're real or computer generated! Avatar's Na'vi is a hint of what is to come. Exciting times to come.

An absolutely unforgettable movie experience in my opinion.

I will start by saying I often find 12A titles restricted for the audience they are aimed at, i.e families but this one manages to be beautiful, epic and savage and I really cannot see what a higher rated certificate could do to improve this movie. That is very very rare for me.

Yes it was cliche packed, yes there was a lack of character development but I think the whole premise of the movie was for Pandora to be the star and it was.

The planet is absolutely superb. It's not just the visuals that were striking, it was the sense of immersion. This was a living breathing planet, and even films set on earth sometimes fail on that one.

I was expecting a run of the mill action flick, I avoided reviews before seeing it and I was stunned at times.

It takes the wacky fun of films such as Indiana Jones, The Goonies etc adRAB an epic sense ala Lord of the Rings and creates a very unique atmosphere.

It's been a long while since a movie has moved me emotionally (probably the head pills to blame) but this one did it superbly. That nice bit of warm fuzziness you sometimes get, Terminator 2 had it to an extent, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Lord of the Rings all had that extra "something" and this movie had it in abundance.

I could say the music score was limited but I was busy being distracted by this incredible colourful Pandora.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread but I feel quite disturbed by the fact that I became attracted to an alien chick with a tail. (God damn you Cameron, ill never be the same again!!!! AAAARGH)

People have been criticizing the story itself and the script but the narration was from perspective of a marines own experiences and it was down to the viewer to thathom the emotions of the characters. All about the visuals.

Loved this, was absolutely fantastic imo. 3D was so much better than i thought it would have been. Thinking of actualyl going to see this again, thought all the acting was fantastic.
Best film of 2009!!!

OMG! One of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. Everything looked so real, I wanted to jump in and hug them, and help them. I LOVED it, I wanted to turn around and see it right away again but my boyfriend got a little head ache and needed to take a nap. I will definitely be going to see this again with my parents on Christmas Day!

Avatar is awesome. Unlike watching anything I've seen before. It felt like watching Raiders or Fellowship for the first time. Whether it'll work on dvd is another question, but here and now, the king of the world returned to his throne. DO see it in 3D. Best effects ever by a mile. Best film of the year. By a mile.

So is this film just a typical tub-thumping yankee killfest with pretty graphics or is there more to it than that? Graphics impress me but I want a decent story too.

Strange how some people get a headache with 3D and others don't, where you constantly looking at the out of focus parts of the picture by any chance? I hear this can cause it.

Just saw this film today and thought it was amazing! I saw it in 3D (not imax though)and was a bit worried beforehand because I thought it would be gimmicky and distracting from the actual film, but they managed to avoid any of this. I soon forgot that I was wearing glasses and became completely immersed in the lanRABcapes.

I was also worried beforehand because in the trailers that I had seen I thought that the blue people looked a bit silly and I wouldnt be able to take them seriously :o But once I got used to them I found it easy to forget that they were not actually real people

The visuals were just amazing. In this film the only limit with the computer animation was imagination, and there was plenty of it. Some of the scenes were just breathtaking, and at a couple of moments I found myself getting a tearful because it was so beautiful :') I felt completely immersed in the jungles and mountains and in the part where they were flying on the dragons I felt like I was sharing the thrill and adrenaline of the characters, especially with the music in full flow.

The plot was a bit simple and predictable, but at least I could enjoy the special effects and visuals without having to think too much about an over-complicated storyline. Anyway there's nothing wrong with a bit of cheese and a nice happy ending :)

This is the best film I have seen in ages. 9/10

Absolutely adored this film. I'll be going to see it for the second time next weekend.
I felt like it almost wanted you to know how it was gonna end, and then made you doubt your prediction towarRAB the conclusion...

As mentioned, the CGI is amazing. I thought the characterisation was generally great. Sigourney Weaver (sp?) played a great character, but there was one (relatively minor) character in particular that I thought was really one dimensional.

Nonetheless, great film. :)

As I said IMO I thought the balance was good enough! I can understand why people feel this way but everyone's opinion of a good movie is different. This balance of Plot and CGI was more than good enough for me.
