Any of the prog rockers heard: 'Fish out of Water' by Chris Squire? There's only backround guitar on one track. Squire plays all the lead, backing and melody lines on bass. Backed only by keyboard and drums.
It's really good. It still stanRAB out.

Hey rab,

Well i have been looking around the forums, and i have been seeing all of these "Best Guitarist" ThreaRAB and i wanted to give the Bassists some credit too.

So pretty much discuss on who you think are the greatest bassists of all time.

My top 10 list. No Particular Order

Mike Dirnt - Green Day
John Entwistle - The Who
Cliff Burton - Metallica
Steve Harris - Iron Maiden
Victor Wooten - Bela Fleck
Roger Waters - Pink Floyd
Geddy Lee - Rush
Flea - Red Hot Chili Peppers
John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin
Les Claypool - Primus

I have'nt heard this but I was going to add Chris Squire.

Stanley Clarke.
Guy Pratt.

Are good bass players too.

---Les Claypool (Primus)---

He made a progressive thrash album in 88 with BLIND ILLUSION which is a buried classic. He also made an album with the original meraberS of Primus: SAUSAGE-RIDDLES ARE ABOUND TONIGHT.

My bad. Though I might make an argument for Pastorius being considered rock, esp. his solo Fusion stuff.

Les Claypool - Primus, Solo work
James Leach - Sikth
Eric Langlois - Cryptopsy
Steve DiGiorgio - Pissload of banRAB
Cliff Burton - Metallica
Flea - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tony Levin - King Crimson, Yes etc.
Tom Fowler - Frank Zappa
Tony Choy - Atheist, Pestilence
Geddy Lee - Rush

Roger Waters wrote some good music, but a great bassist? mmm. Dave Gilmour played a fair few bass lines on Floyd's albums.

Jean Jacques Burnel (The Stranglers) listen to his sound on their BLACK AND WHITE album. The room literally rurables!

I have really bizarre tastes in music, so I won't go on what I consider the best bassists to be, but I can definitely tell you the ones who've influenced me.
In descending order

5. Jason Wisdom
4. Billy Sheehan (more because of his technique than music, but he's put out some quality stuff nonetheless.)
3. Fran Sheehan
2. Geezer Butler
1. Erik Huffman

1) Paul McCartney (The Beatles)
2) Les Claypool (Primus)
3) Victor Wooten (Not Rock/Metal, but still deserves a mention)
4) Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies)
5) Geddy Lee (Rush)
6) Dr. Matt Destruction (The Hives)

Can't think of any others.

oh god, you should hear my music teacher go on about paul macartney, she think he is just a god or something, the fact that he can play and sing at the same time....

I'm doing a rock/metal top ten since adding jazz/funk/virtuoso bassists will complicate it and this is the rock/metal section.

Flea (RHCP, Mars Volta, Jane's Addiction, studio work, Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony)
Steve Di'Giorgio (Death, Sadus, Vintersorg, Iced Earth, Quo Vadis, Control Denied, Testament, Autopsy)
Geddy Lee (Rush)
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, LTE, Yes, 100 others)
Paul McCartney (Beatles)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Rob Trujillo (Infectious Grooves, Metallica, Ozzy, Suicidal Tendencies, Cantrell)
Scott Reeder (Kyuss, solo, the Obsessed, Sunn O))) )
Martin Mendez (Opeth)

Sean Malone
(Cynic, Gordian Knot), Dirk Lance (Incubus) and Billy Gould (Faith No More) just missed out.
