99 toyota corolla tramission problems?

my 99 toyota is making a horrible noise when i start it. when i put it in drive it makes a grinding/growling noise and will only go foward about a foot and freezes up and stops. but it goes perfectly fine in reverse. after about 10 minutes i tried to start and drive it again and it worked fine?? what could be the problem?
 
Something is broken inside your transmission, you need to rebuild or replace it it. Sorry.

It's better to replace than rebuild.
