99 Pontiac Grand AM - change oil light on a week after changing oil?

This is my wife's car...has about 66k miles on it. It was owned by her Grandfather and given to her about 2 or 3 years ago. We don't know when the last oil change was prior to this one, but it had been at least a year and a half. During the time following registration, my wife had driven less than 1000 miles on it. No idea how many miles it had been since the previous change either. Moving along, we did an oil change about 2 weeks ago now and the light came on about a week ago (8 or 9 days give or take).

I checked the oil level recently and it's fine. I put in 5w30 for the winter. Ironically enough, 5w30 is the oil displayed on the cap. I typically use 10w30 for the rest of the year outside of winter. Anyone have an idea as to what could have caused this? One would think that the light would have came on at some point during all that time prior to this when there was old oil in the engine.

it has a reset oil light on look in the owners manual and it will tell you how to reset it computer will set it of at every 5000 miles

faulty oil pressure switch or low oil pressure. i recommend taking it to a machanic to have the oil pressure checked. oil light come on when the pressure drops below 10 psi. If the oil pressure checks out to be low, have the oil pump replaced. Your local shop will confirm the problem.
