Sounds Like A Cracked Head Witch Means The Engine cannot Built Up Enough Compression To Start

But Might Just Be A Head gasket

Make Sure Your Rad is not Clogged full Of Mud on the Front as air needs to Get through to cool Your Coolant and cooling your motor

how About Your Thermostat wont cause it Not To start But will cause it To over Heat

Yesterday evening my husband took myself and some friends to go 4 wheeling down the beach in his 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (6 cylinder). After we got about halfway down the beach, the "Check Gauges" light came on and we realized that the car was badly overheating.

To make a long story short - the problem was a seized radiator fan motor. We allowed the truck a significant amount of time to cool down and then hard wired the fan motor to the battery causing it to start. We then drove the vehicle down the the 10 mile stretch of beach back home to replace the motor in the morning. (We disconnected the fan as to not kill the battery overnight)

To make another long story short - the new fan motor is in but now the truck won't start. The starter is cranking, but it won't turn over and I'm not sure why. It ran a little hot on the ride home yesterday, but other than that, it was okay. I'm hoping it's not a cracked or warped head but, the oil dipstick has no water in it and there is no oil in the antifreeze and like I said, it drove fine yesterday on the ride home.

When the key is turned we can hear the fuel pump, so there is fuel going to the engine. We tried jumping the car, thinking it was a bad battery but still no luck. Also, we scanned for trouble codes and came up with nothing...

I'm completely stumped... Can someone offer an idea (any idea) on what I should check next?

Thanks in advance.
Whew! The Jeep is running! I removed the spark plugs and they were black - literally roasted toasted and burnt to a crisp. They must have been damaged when the truck overheated. After replacing them the truck started right up, but the water pump is squeaking. Should I change it immediately?

There are an abundance of reasons why a vehichle wont start after over heating. Most probable candidate would be an electronic device getting too hot such as a coil pack or electronic ignition. An engine needs only three things to run no matter what brand, type or year of make.... Ignition(spark) , Compression(crank), Fuel(duh!). Having said that you hear the fuel pump running so we assume your getting fuel and it is unlikely that the fuel system was effected by the heat anyways. Now as for the cranking and spark. There are several was to check the spark or "ignition." You can take the spark plug out and lay it on the block somewhere and you will see it spark. That is the easy way but some will tell you how to hook it up to a fancy diagnostic machine and then they will tell you what you owe them for about $75/hr. If you have a good "spark" on the spark plug(it should be bright and you should be able to hear it arc) you should have a running engine. If you do not have a good spark start with "wiggle test"<--- and yes that is a tech. term I have actually read in a tech manual!!! Check the coil wires and the spark plug wires being careful not to mix them up and make sure none are melted or damaged. Remember check the easy stuff first. Then check thinks like ignition relays and fuse boxes then move on to "in-line fuses" and ignition moduals. Some parts stores can check relays to see if they are working properly. Most relays and some other engine electronics work off of small electromagnets that control them and when a magnet gets hot it distorts the molecules in different directions and they no longer function. If I had to guess based on the information provided you have a minor elevctrical problem that will be found somewhere specifically under the hood. I sure hope this helps. BTW if you have good spark shoot some carb cleaner down the intake and if it fires and tries to start you have a fuel system problem. Ie, pressure regulator or clogged filter being that you were on the beach. Again good luck!!!
