99 intrepid transmission problem when you put the car in overdrive position it

works fine and shifts up into? overdrive no problem but after a few minutes or so it downshifts into second and wont come out unless you stop and put it in park.
if you put the shifter in the 3 postition the car shifts fine up to third gear and works
anyone know what the problem is?
