My car over heated yesterday and was leaking a lot of liquidy clear with a brown tinted something. The mechanic called and said they would have to take the timing belt cover off to properly diagnose the problem that the leak and noise was coming from behind there and that also the water tank was behind there.

I am broke already and anxious to find out what the problem might be. Has anyone else had this problem or might know what could be the problem.

Car over heated quickly, smoke/steam from passenger side, Coolant tank empty so I filled it with water, didn't notice change in level after 5 minute drive and engine in the red at that point. I didn't notice any noise, but the water I put in was boiling by the time I arrived at my work. Car has over 206000 miles
can you estimate cost on the water pump and therm I know you wont know exactly but an idea might settle my mind

Sounds like the water pump. It on the pass side. Removing the timing belt cover is a simple thing, and probably necessary to see the water pump. Sorry about the bad luck, but every once in a while things wear out after that many miles.

Cross your fingers for a thermostat. That should be about $150. The water pump would be about $300. The radiator about $500. The head gasket about $800. The head itself = new engine, about $2,900.

Good luck. Be very careful if you continue to drive it like that. If the temp gauge gets close to the red stop right away and shut down your engine to let it cool down. You can cause SEVERE damage driving in the red zone.
