98 ford escort zx2 service engine light?

i went to get gas the other day and i put premium in it.Right after this my service engine light has come on and has stayed on.When i was at a stop light my car lagged and acted like it wanted to quit,but when i give it some gas it went back to normal,and has only done this exactly 2 times.i looked in my owners manual and it says that bad gas can cause this and it also says to never put premium gas in the car to put 87 octane.Just wanting your opinion or mechanical expertise.Thx...
 
Take it to a mechanic and have them hook up their OBD2 scanner to diagnose your problem. That's the only way you will know exactly what's wrong with your vehicle. A service engine light is telling you something is wrong.
