98 ford escort radio/casette player won't pull out far enough to be removed?

After making 2 U-clips from a coat hanger and poping the clips free, I tried removing the unit but there is one wire that is taut and wont allow the unit to slide out enough to unhook all the wires properly. Is there some kind of trick to taking this type of radio out?
 
That's the temperature control cable--it needs to be disconnected at the other end. Look up to the right of the gas pedal; you should see the connection, with a white pin through the middle of it. You need to flex the white pin to release the connection block, then pull the whole cable and assembly out with the dash piece.

Hopefully, this will make more sense when you see it.
