97 Pontiac firebird gas gauge moving around a LOT?

I recently bought a used 97 Pontiac firebird. The car has been great except the gas gauge CONSTANTLY moves around. It won't ever stay still, even if I'm stopped or on level ground. It makes it really difficult because I can't afford to be constantly filling it up, and I never know if I'll have enough gas to get to where I need to go. Is this fixable? What could be causing it?
