97 ford taurus transmission problems?

i have a 97 ford taurussation wagon and it wont shift out of ffirst gear... it started in overdrive, it would shift hard, ans the gas gage would drop before it would shift hard...i have no clue whats wrong and i really need help. evryone in the family said they would help but that was in march and i need a car really bad so i need help.... if u have any ideals let me knw and we can talk and ill tell u more about it.... thank u
