put head gaskets on and have 0 compression, completely reassembled, what could be the problem. Am I getting blowback to the crank, or what?

Sounds like you tightened down the rocker arm nuts all the way like is done on most stud mounted rocker arm systems. That will open the valves on a chevy and keep them open so no compression. It will sometimes bend the valves also.

Tell me how you adjusted the lifters. That is the only sane place you could have goofed. Have to adjust lifters with each individual cyl. One at a time on top dead centre. 0 backlash, then 3/4 turn more.

Humm... incorrect or incorrectly installed head gaskets or incorrectly assembled valve train come to mind.

aye carumba! how do you mess up a small block chevy? there not rocket science. guess it's time to take it back apart, mind if I ask if you took a compression check or better yet a leak down before you decided to replace the head gaskets?

You don't mention whether it's zero compression on one cylinder, or all eight. If it's just one, I'd suspect the valve, since you pulled the head, you may have a valve stuck open, either from debris, or a stuck guide, or even maybe a bent valve shaft that isn't letting it close all the way. If you're getting no compression in any of the cylinders, I'd say you've got some debris under the heads or the gaskets are damaged. Good Luck.
