96 toyota corolla door locks failing?

I have a 1996 toyota corolla and like 6 months ago the ignition barrel went out and i had to have it replaced- they said it looked too worn out. So now that works fine but the door locks still use the original keys that went in the original ignition and now i have to turn the key over and over about 10 times before it will unlock. Is it the key or locks? and what do i do about it? i dont want to be locked out of my car somewhere while i have the keys in my hand
