96 honda civic overheating problem plzzz help................?

I have a 96 Honda civic dx. i just put a new motor in with 60,000 miles. it started with leaking problem i got that fixed but i only have water in it now cause i didn't want to waste so much money on antifreeze just to leak out. but anyhow my car temp gauge will go up to red i will shut if off when that happens. but sometimes it goes up stays ther for second and drops back down real quick but only half way. not to the normal running temp. i replaced the radiator and the thermostat idk what else it could be. plz help out and thank you very much!

do a block test on it. that will tell you if its a blown head gasket. see where the antifreeze or water is leaking from if you cant find a leak then it probably is a headgasket. i had the same problem with an accord i had. the block test will tell you for sure. or check your oil and if it has water/anitfreeze in it and looks milky then that also is a sure sign of a blown head gasket

You need to see if the car is actually overheatng or is it just the coolant temp sensor or even the gauge. id just buy the sensor it wont cost much like $15- 20.
