'96 Ford F150 Aux. Fuel tank problem.?

Hello. My grandfather has a 1996 Ford F-150, and he's asked for my internet assistance. He's having trouble with his two fuel tanks. He says he'll fill up both tanks, front and rear. He'd select the rear tank fine, but when he selects to have fuel from the front tank, the car dies. He says there's two versions of the truck, one with plastic tanks and fuel pumps in the tanks, and one with metal tanks with the fuel pumps on the fuel lines. He has the latter, with the pumps on the fuel lines. It's fuel injected. There's no problem with the fuse he says, but i'm wondering if anybody has any ideas? Thanks.

The dash switch for selecting the tanks controls a solenoid (electrically operated valve) that switches the fuel draw from one tank or the other. I'd bet the solenoid or fuel line from the solenoid to the front tank is clogged, or the fuel line between the solenoid and front tank might even be broken, cracked, or disconnected. There is also a tank vent for each tank. If the front tank vent is clogged the tank develops a vacuum that won't allow fuel to flow. My 95 F-250 Super Duty has a single pump that draws from whichever tank is selected. If he has 2 pumps, the one for the front tank may be bad. He needs to also check to see if each tank has its own fuel filter. A clogged filter could cause the problem.
