95 toyota camry LE running hott?

my camry is running hot . during the winter it is fine but during the summer it gets extremly hot.the only way the temp guage goes up is only if im off the highway or if im in traffic...my dad believes it is the fans but i have no idea how much that would cost me plz give me feed back ..the check engine light tends to come on allot to...and this weird smell is also there..plz help
 
Just do not keep driving when it gets hot! Major damage may will occur.
Yes to me it sounds like the cooling fans are not working. Put the A/C on when you first start the car and look to see/hear the fan(s) going under the hood, If no, then it/they may be burn out. I don`t remember if that year had one or two fans. Get it looked at soon before more damage/money will need to be spent.
