bad cables or check and see if it will start in neutral.
If it won't then your Transmission Range Sensor is bad.
But then again some starters are sometimes shipped out bad.
Best to have them tested under load when you purchase them.

Replaced Starter, Relay and battery terminals. Noticed the ground terminal wire was slightly corroded but the truck started anyhow after I changed the starter. Solenoid on the starter was loose is why I changed the starter. Took off next morning and the lights went dim and , of course, it would not start after I shut it off. Bad Alternator, I assume now. So got it home , charged the battery and now all I get is the relay clicking when I try starting it. I know that a bad alternator would not stop it from turning over, starting and I will have to change it but being it is only clicking at the relay has me puzzeled. Gimme' something to go on...? Bad battery cable most likely. Inline 6 cyl.
