94 Chevy Corsica Freon Question. Read below for details.?

I am taking a long trip in my car and need the air conditioning working. It worked when I first got it, years ago. Now I think all I need is to put freon in it. But the mechanics, want to charge me an arm and leg for just checking to see if it has a vacuum leak. My question is, is it really necessary to get it checked? And if I don't get it checked and the freon leaks out, can it blow my engine up or damage it in any way?

no it wont damage the engine.
your car will just blow out air and not cold.

If you add refrigerant, it will leak out again. I would get it leak checked and have it fixed. Also, it won't harm the engine.
