94 chevy cavelier,stuck in reverse. The gearshift is totally loose now.?

Open the hood driver side,near the brake master cylinder,look down to see shift cable,the grommet or nut still attach?Or broken cable.Not too bad if you know what you are doing.Chock the wheels and parking brake on tight first though,for safety.
