93 Toyota Camry is sputtering while idle and dying at stop lights--what's wrong?

I've been having exhaust problems with my 93 Toyota Camry and shakes while running. A few weeks ago I noticed the car started sputtering while idle and felt as if it was about to die. I took my car into my local shop and they said nothing was wrong--checked all the plugs, wires and hoses and did an oil change. I thought maybe it was just the exhaust, that is until my car started dying at stop lights. It would die as soon as I started accelerating. I noticed white smoke coming out when it died. After turning it off, I was able to restart it and was running fine enough to drive home. I'm scared to stop in it for any amount of time. I noticed the check engine light did not come on at all.I checked the fluids hand were fine. The smoke came out of the right of the hood. It happened briefly. What could be wrong?

I am not an expert mechanic, but you might have a problem with your carburetor. A carb controls the gas and air mixture for your engine. My theory is that your engine is not receiving enough fuel while idling. and when you press the accelerator your engine receives a excessively rich mixture and chokes the engines off- which might explain the white smoke. Again I am not an expert mechanic, but it is worth looking into.
