93 Ford Explorer...heating/ac not working?

The heater was making a grinding noise then it turned into a thumping sound..next thing i know i smelled rubber burning...now nothing works...no heat and no ac...don't have the money to have a mechanic fix and cant afford to play the process of elimination....any ideas? Need fixed asap! Fuses are fine...everything else works good...just no heat or a/c.
